Shopping & Returns

What types of items do you sell?

We offer a curated selection of books for adults, children, and teens, as well as unique gifts, jewelry, accessories, puzzles, stationery, holiday ornaments, crafting kits, and more. Our inventory is thoughtfully sourced, featuring primarily small businesses and often underrepresented authors.

Do you buy or accept donations of used books?

We do accept donations of used books that are in good, sellable condition. We sell these on our used book cart and a portion of proceeds are donated to the Pasadena Humane Society.

We also encourage folks with books to donate to support our neighbor Underdog Bookstore up the street on Myrtle Avenue. Donations can also be made to the Friends of the Monrovia Public Library.

What is your return policy?

Books are non-refundable and non-returnable but may be exchanged if brought back in original condition with a receipt within 30 days. Non-book items may qualify for return or exchange depending on their condition. All returns and exchanges must be made in person.

Used books or books purchased at a discount are not eligible for return.

Can I make a purchase online?

Yes! Purchases can be made online, for shipping or pickup in-store.

Do you offer shipping?

We offer shipping via UPS and USPS to anywhere in the United States.

Do you offer gift wrapping?

Yes! We sell gift wrapping (bags, wrapping paper, etc.) and offer gift wrapping service for a small fee in-store.

Do you offer gift cards?

Yes, gift cards are available for purchase in-store or online in any amount.

Books & Inventory

Can I special order a book that isn’t in stock?

Absolutely! Visit us in-store or fill out our online Book Purchase Request form, and we’ll do our best to order the book for you.

Can I request a specific item for your store to stock?

We love suggestions! Let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll consider adding it to our inventory. Please keep in mind, our brand is whimsical, feminine, and elevated, and we prioritize goods by female- or minority-owned businesses that evoke creativity and beauty.

I'm an author. Will you carry my book or host an author talk?

We have two ways to support local authors in our store. If you’re traditionally published or available through one of our distributors, we prefer to purchase directly from them. However, if you’re self-published or not available through a distributor and would like us to consider your book, please fill out our "New Author Request" form at the bottom of our homepage.

All submissions will be evaluated through our Collection Development Policy to ensure all titles are in alignment with our values and mission. If we feel your book will be a good addition to our collection, we will reach out to you. We regret not being able to accommodate every request. All decisions are final. Please note that any titles created with the use of AI will not be considered.

I'm a creator/artist/handicrafter. Will you sell my goods?

We love working with local creators, artists, and handicrafters that align with our brand! Fill out our Vendor Application form, and we'll be in touch.

Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee inclusion in our collection. Space is limited, and our selection process depends on how well your products and brand align with Black Cat Fables, along with a myriad of other factors that influence our inventory choices. While we may not be able to accept every vendor that applies, we sincerely appreciate your interest and encourage you to apply!

Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to respond to submissions that are not selected. Thank you for your understanding and support!

Store Experience

What are your store hours?

  • Monday: Closed
  • Tuesday-Thursday: 9am-5pm
  • Friday: 9am-8pm
  • Saturday: 9am-5pm
  • Sunday: 9am-1pm

What's upstairs?

Our decorative stairs are for looks, but the upstairs area is a staff work area and storage space. You won’t find customer access up there, but we’re always happy to help you find whatever you need on the main floor!

Is your store accessible under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)?

Yes, we are committed to providing an inclusive and accessible experience for all our customers. If you have any accessibility questions or needs, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our staff—we’re here to help!

Is there a public restroom available?

Yes, we have a public restroom available for customer use in-store.

Are pets allowed in the store?

Well-behaved pets on a leash are welcome until our café opens! After that, only service animals will be allowed.

Is Wi-Fi available in the store?

Yes! Wi-Fi is available with a purchase. The network and password can be found on your receipt.

Events & Programs

What types of events do you host?

We host book signings, crafting workshops, author talks, book clubs, and seasonal events like holiday sing-alongs. Check our Workshops, Book Clubs, and Special Events pages, or follow us on social media for upcoming events!

Can I reserve a spot in workshops or events?

Yes, we encourage reservations as spots fill quickly. Visit our Workshops page to review our upcoming offerings and reserve your spot.

What is your book club like?

Our book club, Purrs & Pages, meets twice per month, featuring a different book per meeting. It’s casual, welcoming, and open to everyone — even if you haven’t finished the book! Sign up for meeting details and exclusive discounts on book club picks.

Café

When will the café open?

The café is officially open as of February 2026!

What kind of coffee and drinks do you offer?

Our café features a selection of high-quality, ethically-sourced, and locally roasted coffee, teas, and a small selection of specialty beverages to enjoy while you shop or relax. Please see our Café page for more info.

Do you have food available in the café?

We do not currently have food items available for purchase. If you would like to bring in a small snack to enjoy with your coffee you are welcome to! Please no hot foods.

Are pets allowed in the café?

Service animals are welcome. We appreciate your understanding as we create an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.

Can I reserve seating in the café for events or groups?

Our store is a cozy space, so for large groups and special events, please contact our staff in advance to discuss availability and options. We’re here to make your experience memorable!
